Brushing with ‘The Bard’

Pupils from John Wheeldon Primary School and members of Staffordshire Women’s Refuge (SWR) are preparing to ‘brush with The Bard’, when they take part in a series of art and drama workshops for this year’s Stafford Festival Shakespeare.

For the 11th consecutive year, Producers of Stafford Festival Shakespeare and the Independent Community Arts Partnership are working in partnership to deliver a Community Engagement Programme – known previously as the Learning Participation and Outreach Programme.

The programme is designed to assist local schools, charities and/or community groups in exploring the characters and richness of Shakespeare’s language, in an effort to enhance confidence in engaging activities, improve understanding of live theatre, and (most importantly) have fun!

This year the programme will offer a stimulating, innovative and inspiring way to immerse in the magical works of The Bard, with a particular focus on the themes present in this year’s Stafford Festival Shakespeare production of The Tempest. During May and June, pupils and SWR members will participate in art and drama workshops led by practitioners Kiersten Leslie, Helen Wilson and Mark Uttley.

ICAP artist and facilitator, Helen Wilson, said:

“The Tempest is a great play to encourage people to be creative. I think we can look forward to some stunning artwork."

As in previous years, the artwork produced from the workshops will be on display at Stafford Castle for the duration of Stafford Festival Shakespeare 2017.

This year’s Stafford Festival Shakespeare production of The Tempest will open on Thursday 22nd June and run until Saturday 8th July 2017 at Stafford Castle. Tickets start at £13.50 and can be purchased from the box office on 01785 619080 or by visiting www.staffordfestivalshakespeare.com
